It is a story about youth that refuses to accept the boundaries of its own existence. The youthful “Me” wants to set out into the world, while the elders explain to it the laws of nature and the role it was destined to fulfill. It rejects their arguments, because its dream feels more real than experience. The painting does not decide who is right. It only asks whether human development means abandoning one’s dreams, or continually attempting to transcend one’s own roots. It shows a generational conflict and the clash between dreams and reality.
